Photographers of Chiapas’ Perspectives on the Zapatista Movement to Be Highlighted in Cuartoscuro Magazine

The Cuartoscuro agency and its magazine plan a special edition devoted exclusively to the Zapatista movement, capturing its evolution since it began in 1994. The project aims to feature images taken specifically by photographers native to Chiapas, recognizing a perspective that has been less represented historically. Pedro Valtierra, director of Cuartoscuro, shared this initiative during his visit to San Cristóbal de Las Casas.

"The most known photographs about the movement come from those who traveled from other states, but the viewpoint of Chiapan photographers is missing. We want to bring that to light," Valtierra explained. He stressed the importance of a magazine issue dedicated solely to the Chiapan viewpoint, both on how the movement was viewed initially and how it has been seen over time.

Valtierra visited San Cristóbal to present his photography books titled Sin miedo a la luz and Nicaragua: La revolución sandinista , attracting around 40 attendees at La Enseñanza, Casa de la Ciudad.

Describing himself as a street photographer passionate about capturing real life, Valtierra noted, "I have always been drawn to the street and to social issues. Chiapas is the Mexican state I have photographed the most since 1978, when I worked with the newspaper Unomásuno, visiting five or six times a year for two or three weeks at a time." He acknowledged an affinity especially for social themes prevalent in Chiapas.
